What is the Associated General Contractors of Utah?

The Associated General Contractors of Utah is the state chapter of AGC of America, founded in 1922. It is the trade association for commercial construction: more than 660 general contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers completing over 85 percent of Utah's commercial construction. It lobbies, trains and connects members from Salt Lake City and a Southern Utah office in St. George.

AGC of Utah states its mission as leading and uniting Utah's construction community through advocacy, education and resources, under the values skill, integrity and responsibility. It is not a licensing body: Utah contractors are licensed by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). AGC runs the pre-licensure courses many contractors take first, then represents them once they are in business.

What does AGC membership give a St. George contractor?

Lobbying at the Legislature by four AGC lobbyists, more than 100 training events a year including safety courses and continuing education, five apprenticeship programs, a listing in the member directory, member-only discounts including an association healthcare plan and workers' compensation savings, 13 industry committees, WeBuildUtah workforce events, and the annual convention. Dues are set by the prior year's work volume, not a flat fee.

AGC does not publish dollar amounts; the schedule is a chart linked from its Why Join page, and applications go through members.agc-utah.org. For a Southern Utah firm the practical gains are the St. George classes (flagger certification, traffic control, pre-licensure and exam prep run locally instead of in Salt Lake), the healthcare plan, and the directory listing that owners and architects use to find bidders. Home builders are a different trade group; see the associations below.
