What Is the Bar 10 Ranch?

The Bar 10 is a working cattle ranch and guest ranch on the Arizona Strip, the remote stretch of northern Arizona between the Utah line and the Grand Canyon. The ranch sits near the canyon's North Rim above Whitmore Wash, roughly 70 miles south of St. George by dirt road, and it has hosted Grand Canyon visitors for several decades. Its office and mailing address are in St. George, which is where bookings are handled.

Most guests come for one of two reasons. The first is the Colorado River: Whitmore Wash is a common exchange point for commercial river trips, and the Bar 10 coordinates the helicopter and airplane transfers that let rafters start or end a trip partway through the canyon, with a night at the ranch on either side. The second is the ranch stay itself. Lodging is five dormitory-style lodge rooms with bunk beds for two to four people each, and Conestoga-style covered wagons in three sizes that sleep one to six, with lights and bedding. Meals are included. Activities run to horseback riding, ATV and UTV rides out to the canyon rim, high-desert ranger tours, and skeet and pistol shooting. The ranch has its own private airstrip for small aircraft, which is how many guests arrive.

Bar 10 Ranch is reached by a long unpaved road south from St. George across the Arizona Strip, roughly 70 miles and several hours of driving, or by small aircraft into the ranch's private airstrip. Season and Booking

The ranch is open seasonally from mid-March through mid-November, with some limits on what runs in March and April. Reservations are made through bar10.com or by phone. Because the ranch is far from any town, pavement or cell service, book well ahead, confirm your arrival method with the office, and carry extra water, fuel and a spare tire if you drive.
