Sand Mountain Open OHV Area

The Sand Mountain Open Off-Highway Vehicle Area is BLM land next to Sand Hollow State Park near Hurricane, Utah, popular for riding ATVs, UTVs and dirt bikes on its dunes. The BLM designated it an open area in 1999. There are no fees.

Getting There

From the Southern Parkway (SR-7), take the Sand Hollow Road exit and continue about half a mile to Waddy's Corral Trailhead. Sand Hollow State Park, which has its own entrance fee, borders the area and offers additional dune access and camping.

Rules and Camping

Dispersed camping is allowed for up to 14 days in any 28-day period. Utah requires OHV registration, and dune riding typically calls for a whip flag so other riders can see you over the crests. Bring water and fuel, since there are no services at the dunes, and avoid the hottest summer afternoons, when temperatures regularly pass 100°F.
