What is Sakura Steakhouse in St George?

Sakura Japanese Steakhouse, also called Sakura Sushi and Japanese Steakhouse, is a Japanese restaurant at 81 N 1100 E in St. George, Utah. It has teppanyaki hibachi tables where a chef cooks at your table, a sushi bar, and a menu of Thai curries and noodles. It serves lunch on weekdays and dinner every night.

The restaurant's website calls it "Southern Utah's finest Japanese cuisine" and says its management team and chefs have years of experience with Japanese food. It is a locally run restaurant, not part of a national hibachi chain, so you won't find its menu at other Sakura restaurants around the country. SGWOM is not affiliated with the restaurant.

What should you order at Sakura?

For the full hibachi dinner, order a hibachi entree: they run from $16.50 for vegetables to $31.95 for an 8-ounce filet mignon, and each comes with miso soup, house salad, grilled vegetables and rice. Sushi fans should look at the special rolls, most priced from about $11 to $19, or share a sushi platter.

Sushi and rolls

The sushi bar makes classic rolls like California, spicy tuna and yellowtail for about $7.45 to $10.45, plus about 35 special rolls. Several are named after the area, including the Zion Roll ($19.45), the St. George Roll ($16.45) and the Virgin River Roll ($16.45). Deep-fried rolls such as the Las Vegas Roll and Flaming Lips Roll cost $13.45 to $16.45. For two people, the Love Boat for Two ($76.95) includes sashimi, nigiri and three rolls. Nigiri and sashimi are also sold by the piece, two pieces per order.

Thai dishes, noodles and chef's specials

Sakura also serves a list of Thai and chef's special dishes that a diner review on the restaurant's own site calls out: roast duck curry ($28.95), spicy basil lamb ($27.95), walnut shrimp ($26.95) and pad thai ($15.95). Other options include ramen in miso broth, yaki soba and udon noodles, chicken or pork katsu, and soups such as chicken coconut and hot and sour seafood.

Lunch specials

On weekdays the lunch menu is the cheapest way to eat here. Hibachi lunch plates run from $11.45 (vegetables) to $18.45 (filet mignon), and any two items cost $21.50. Teriyaki and tempura lunch boxes cost $14.00 to $17.95 and come with miso soup, salad, two potstickers and four pieces of California roll. Sushi and sashimi lunch sets cost $15.00 to $19.45.

Dessert and drinks

Desserts include tempura bananas, mango sticky rice, mochi ice cream, fried ice cream and a tempura-fried cheesecake. The drinks list has house and premium sake by the glass or bottle, a four-sake sampler, flavored soju and Japanese marble soda.

What is the hibachi experience like?

At a hibachi table, you sit around a flat-top teppanyaki grill and a chef cooks your meal in front of you. Sakura describes its chefs’ cooking as skillful showmanship. Expect a meal that takes longer than a regular table dinner and, at busy times, sharing the grill with another party, which is usual at hibachi restaurants.

The chef grills your vegetables, rice and protein on the same flat-top, then serves each guest in turn, so everyone at the table eats at about the same time. Hibachi works best when you have time to spare: plan on a longer dinner than you would at a regular table, and don't book it right before a show or a game. For a quick meal, sit at the sushi bar or a regular table instead.

Is Sakura good for groups, birthdays and families?

Yes. The restaurant pitches itself for birthdays with family, date nights and nights out with friends, and its Google listing marks it as good for groups and good for children. There is a kids menu for ages 10 and under, from $13.50 to $19.95, and every kids entree comes with miso soup, salad and rice.

  • Birthdays: book the hibachi table by phone and give the size of your group so the restaurant can seat you together.
  • Kids: the kids menu includes teriyaki chicken ($14.95), hibachi shrimp ($14.95), teriyaki steak ($15.95) and teriyaki noodles ($13.50 to $15.50).
  • Couples: the sushi bar or a two-person platter like Sushi for Two ($59.95) suits a quieter date night. For more ideas, see our St. George date night guide.
  • Accessibility: the Google listing shows a wheelchair-accessible entrance, restroom, seating and parking.

Does Sakura take reservations?

Yes. Sakura takes reservations by phone at (435) 275-2888, and the restaurant says to call during its opening hours. There is no online booking on its website. Book ahead for a hibachi table on Friday or Saturday night, and call several days early for a large birthday group so the restaurant can seat everyone together.

Tips for visiting

  • Mind the weekday gap: the restaurant is closed from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Saturday is the only day you can have a mid-afternoon meal.
  • Sunday is dinner only: doors open at 4:30 p.m., and the kitchen closes earlier, at 9 p.m.
  • Busy times: Friday and Saturday dinners are the busiest. St. George also fills up during spring sports tournaments, Ironman and St. George Marathon weekends and the winter snowbird season, so book ahead then.
  • Save money at lunch: the weekday hibachi lunch costs several dollars less than the same entree at dinner.
  • Takeout: sushi and noodle dishes travel well. Call your order in at (435) 275-2888.
  • Payment: credit cards, debit cards and tap-to-pay are accepted, according to the Google listing.
