Little Black Mountain Petroglyph Site

The Little Black Mountain Petroglyph Site sits on Bureau of Land Management land just across the Arizona line south of St. George, Utah. According to the BLM, it holds more than 500 petroglyphs made by members of several different American Indian groups over an 8,000-year period. The site is managed by the BLM's Arizona Strip Field Office, which is based in St. George.

Getting There

The BLM's directions start from the Southern Parkway: take the River Road exit, follow River Road south into Arizona for 0.3 miles, then turn left and follow unimproved routes for about 4.5 miles. The BLM also lists an alternate route from the Warner Valley exit (Exit 10). High-clearance vehicles are a must and four-wheel drive is recommended. Avoid the roads when they are wet or rain is expected, and note that the BLM reports the primary access road has recently changed because of a gravel pit operation on state land.

At the Site

The site and trail are free and open to the public; commercial or large organized group events need a special permit. There is a vault toilet at the trailhead but no drinking water, and cell service is unreliable. Bring water, sun protection and sturdy shoes, especially from May through September, when desert temperatures regularly pass 100°F.

Visiting Rock Art Respectfully
