Silver Reef Ghost Town stands as one of the most remarkable mining stories in the American West, located just off Interstate 15 near Leeds, Utah, approximately 20 minutes northeast of St. George. Silver Reef holds the unique geological distinction of being the only place in the world where silver was discovered in sandstone — a formation that geologists of the 1870s considered impossible, making the town's very existence a testament to the persistence of prospectors who refused to believe the experts.

History of Silver Reef

Silver Reef's story began in 1866 when a rancher discovered silver-bearing sandstone near the town of Leeds. By the late 1870s, the discovery had attracted thousands of miners, merchants, and fortune seekers who transformed the remote desert location into a booming mining town with a population exceeding 1,500 residents. At its peak, Silver Reef boasted a Wells Fargo office, a Catholic church, multiple saloons, stores, a Chinatown district, and all the trappings of a prosperous Western mining community. The town produced millions of dollars in silver before falling prices and flooding mines led to its decline in the mid-1880s. By 1891, the last mine had closed, and Silver Reef joined the ranks of the West's ghost towns.

Silver Reef Museum and Art Gallery

Today, the Silver Reef Museum occupies the beautifully restored Wells Fargo Express building, one of the original structures from the town's mining heyday. The museum houses an impressive collection of mining artifacts, period photographs, geological specimens showing the famous silver-bearing sandstone, historical documents, and exhibits that bring the town's colorful past to life. Adjacent to the museum, an art gallery features works by local Southern Utah artists. Admission to both the museum and gallery is free, making Silver Reef one of the best free attractions in the St. George area.

Walking the Town Site

Visitors can explore the Silver Reef town site on foot, following interpretive trails past the foundations and remnants of buildings that once lined the bustling main street. Informational markers identify key locations including the Catholic church site, the cemetery, mine entrances, and commercial buildings. The walking tour provides a tangible connection to the lives of the miners, merchants, and families who called Silver Reef home during its brief but dramatic existence. The surrounding landscape of red sandstone cliffs and desert vegetation creates a hauntingly beautiful setting that photographers find irresistible.
