What Is Zion National Park?

Zion National Park is a parks business located in Springdale, Utah, serving Springdale, Hurricane, LaVerkin, and 2 other Southern Utah communities. Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah is one of America's most visited national parks, featuring Angels Landing, The Narrows, towering sandstone cliffs, and world-class hiking.

Zion National Park — Southern Utah's Crown Jewel

Zion National Park is Southern Utah's most iconic destination and one of the most visited national parks in the United States, attracting over 4 million visitors annually. Located 45 minutes northeast of St. George near the gateway town of Springdale, Zion encompasses 229 square miles of dramatic sandstone canyons, towering cliffs, narrow slot canyons, and the emerald waters of the Virgin River. The park's massive red and white Navajo Sandstone walls — some rising over 2,000 feet — create one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on Earth.

Iconic Hikes & Experiences

Zion is home to some of America's most famous hikes. Angels Landing is a thrilling 5.4-mile round trip climb to a narrow ridge with 1,500-foot drop-offs on both sides (permit required). The Narrows takes hikers through the Virgin River at the bottom of a 2,000-foot-deep slot canyon — one of the most unique hiking experiences in the world. The Observation Point Trail offers the park's most panoramic viewpoint. For easier options, the Riverside Walk (2 miles, paved), Pa'rus Trail (3.5 miles, family-friendly), and Canyon Overlook Trail (1 mile to a stunning viewpoint) provide incredible scenery without extreme difficulty.

Planning Your Visit From St. George

Zion is approximately 45 minutes from St. George via Highway 9 through Hurricane and LaVerkin. During peak season (April-October), the park operates a mandatory shuttle system in the main canyon — private vehicles are not allowed on the scenic drive. The shuttle departs from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center and Springdale. Off-season (November-March), you can drive your own vehicle through the canyon. Zion entrance fee is $35 per vehicle (valid 7 days) or free with an America the Beautiful annual pass. Combine your Zion visit with dining in Springdale, soaking at nearby hot springs, or exploring Kolob Canyons (the quieter northern section of the park accessible from I-15).
