Sand Mountain is one of Southern Utah's most popular off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation areas, located near Hurricane in Washington County. The area features towering sand dunes and vast desert terrain that attract thousands of ATV riders, dirt bikers, sand rail enthusiasts, and off-road adventurers throughout the year. Managed by the BLM, Sand Mountain provides a thrilling outdoor experience for motorsports enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Riding at Sand Mountain

The sand dunes at Sand Mountain offer varied terrain from gentle slopes suitable for beginners to steep, challenging faces that test experienced riders. The open desert surrounding the dunes provides additional riding opportunities on packed sand and dirt trails. Popular activities include dune riding on ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes, sand rail racing, and camping under the stars. The area is open year-round, though spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures. Winter riding is also popular on mild days.

Visitor Tips

Sand Mountain is located approximately 20 minutes from Hurricane and 40 minutes from St. George via I-15. OHV registration and safety flags are required. Bring plenty of water, fuel, and supplies — there are no services at the dunes. Primitive camping is available. For equipment, check out Moto United in St. George or Southern Utah Adventure Center for guided tours. Sand Mountain is one of the most exciting outdoor activities near St. George for motorsports fans.
