SUU Outdoors

SUU Outdoors serves Southern Utah University students and the broader Cedar City community by providing outdoor recreation opportunities, equipment rentals, and educational programming. Operating from their Basecamp location in the Sharwan Smith Student Center, the program fosters connection and community through meaningful outdoor experiences throughout the Southwest region.

Equipment Rental Services

SUU Outdoors maintains an inventory of outdoor recreation equipment available for rental, including camping gear such as tents and sleeping bags, winter equipment like snowshoes, and essential items like headlamps and other backcountry supplies. The rental program makes outdoor recreation accessible to students and community members who may not own specialized equipment, lowering the barrier to entry for those new to outdoor activities or those wanting to try different pursuits before investing in their own gear.

Guided Trips and Adventures

The program organizes guided outdoor trips throughout the year, taking advantage of Southern Utah's diverse landscape and nearby natural areas. Trip offerings include hiking excursions in the region's many parks and wilderness areas, as well as multi-day river rafting adventures on waterways like the San Juan River and Cataract Canyon. These guided experiences provide opportunities for participants of all experience levels to explore the outdoors with trained trip leaders who emphasize safety and environmental stewardship.

Climbing and Challenge Facilities

SUU Outdoors operates climbing facilities including a climbing tower, rappel station, and tread wall located in the PE Building on campus. These facilities provide opportunities for students and community members to develop climbing skills in a controlled environment before venturing onto natural rock faces. The program also features a challenge course that offers team-building experiences for groups seeking collaborative outdoor activities.

Educational Programming

Through their outdoor education series and LEAP (Local Events, Activities & Programming) initiative, SUU Outdoors provides learning opportunities that help participants develop outdoor skills and environmental awareness. Programming addresses topics relevant to recreating safely and responsibly in Southern Utah's unique desert and mountain environments.

Location and Community

Cedar City's position at the intersection of diverse ecosystems makes it an ideal base for outdoor recreation. Within reasonable driving distance, outdoor enthusiasts can access Cedar Breaks National Monument, Brian Head ski resort, Zion National Park, and numerous wilderness areas in the Dixie National Forest. SUU Outdoors leverages this geographic advantage to introduce students and community members to the range of outdoor opportunities available in the region.

The program operates additional facilities at The Garage, located at the River House on main street, and maintains a retail shop for outdoor gear and supplies. For those seeking lodging near outdoor destinations, The Dwellings at River Rock in La Verkin and Majestic View Lodge in Springdale offer accommodations for trips to the Zion area.
