Road Trip: The Cedar City Sheep Parade
One of the most unusual fall traditions in Utah is an hour up I-15. At the Cedar Livestock & Heritage Festival, October 23-24, ranchers drive roughly 1,000 sheep down Cedar City's Main Street, from 200 South to 400 North, as the flock moves from its summer range on Cedar Mountain to winter pasture in the valley. The parade starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday with antique tractors, farm machinery, and horses, and the sheep come last. Last year they reached Main Street around 11 a.m., so grab a curb spot early and stay until the end. The rest of the weekend includes antique tractor and draft horse pulls, a ranch rodeo, sheep shearing demonstrations, a Dutch oven cook-off tasting, cowboy poetry and music, a quilt show, and a kids' pedal tractor pull. Most of it takes place at the Cross Hollow Event Center arenas.
